I have been thinking about this particular topic for a while. I have been trying to put my thoughts in order regarding this one. I hope all the effort has paid off.
I think there are two parts to a personality, namely the style and the substance. The substance is the one which is the essence, the thing which takes a person where they are. But there is another component called style. Thats responsible for intangible stuff which are crucial for all the successes mentioned above. Some people think that style is more important than substance. Some people admit that fact, others don't. I personally don't think haven't been able to take one or the other side of the argument. I have realized that there can be zero style, and that means you put in no effort.
In some professions, I think style plays a greater role than anything else. If you are in a job where your perception among your employees matters a lot, then you would definitely need a lot of style. Style is that element which is the immediate signature that you leave at every occasion. Its the first thing people recognize in you. If you are a manager, style is paramount in order to maintain your position among your peers. Charm is part of style. There are some natural elements to style, and those are define the style mostly. The temporary additions wear off very fast. I, am, not, a, manager. And most of the day, I am trying to figure out simulators and bugs in code, so I really don't need to worry about the impression I leave on people. What matters to me more than anything else is the computer understand what I am saying, and vice versa. And luckily for me, computers haven't been taught to grasp style. Its so much better when things around you are linear. People aren't. I guess thats 'coz the brain has to service its illogical side in order to be creative. That is the only plausible explanation that I can come up with. I have an interest in trying to figure out how people decide on their actions, and if you have anything to say in this regard, I am all ears. Some actions in this world seem like pure bull-shit. And I would to hear how and why they could justify the actions.
Anyways, coming back to style over substance. I think its unfair to look at lives as either with or without style or substance. I think there's more to it. There are some supercars which fall into the following analogy. Piece together the words style over substance and think again. Doesn't that sound like a garnishing of style over substance. I never think of it that way, but once I did, I couldn't think of it any other way. Style is the icing on the cake that is the substance. You like the icing, but it costs nothing compared to the cake. The icing always has to be with something, otherwise it has no meaning. Some super cars are designed inside out. The final shape is made aerodynamic once they know the approximate shape based on the engine and the chassis. Thats smart engineering. And it works really well. Taking off from the icing part, do we really need it? Isn't icing just and add-on? I mean, don't some cakes taste much better without icing? Isn't style just another way of adding something hollow. If style is really connected to one's field, isn't that better put without the garnish? Wouldn't it be easy to appreciate without the blanket of style which may blur whats inside. I think style is as important as icing. I don't prefer icing on most of the cakes. Its a stupid way of adding to the selling price. Its got no use but to add fat. In the case, its your ego that's disproportionately growing. And no over-the-counter/prescription pill can solve that problem.
Dedicated to everyone who thinks MTV has more style than computer labs.
